Let’s Read

March is dedicated to National Reading Month. Reading has a plethora of benefits, regardless of age. As a child, I loved to read, and I still do. It’s free entertainment. Reading would take me places without traveling; I would experience people and things while broadening my vocabulary, boosting my imagination and stimulating my mind. It was a fun escape! Reading reminds me of the wardrobe they found in Narina that led them to another realm.

I remember The Babysitter Club, R.L. Stine, and American Doll books (my favorite). I vividly recall being absorbed in a book titled

Why did Grandpa Die” by Barbara Shook Hazen, which helped me understand my Papa's death. I turned the pages of that book numerous times, it comforted me. I loved the book fair at school too, I could not wait for it to come!! Then I graduated to reading books by Terri McMillan, Sister Souljah, Eric Jerome Dickey, Toni Morrison, Zane, and Zora Neale Hurston, to name a few. I don’t have the time for leisure reading like I did when I was younger, but I do partake in reading self-improvement books and materials related to my studies.

I may sound cliche when I state this, but reading is very fundamental. Reading is essential and serves as a fundamental building block for learning. It can broaden your vocabulary and open your perspective. Reading is a right many died for us to have. Reading is good for you because it improves your focus, memory, empathy, and communication skills. It can reduce stress, improve your mental health and help you live longer.

I once volunteered to read at a center for 3 & 4-year-olds. It broke my heart because no matter how enthusiastic I read and got into character, those children paid me no attention. Sadly, I told myself these children aren’t being read to at home. I always read to my children, even when they were in my womb. My favorite book to read to them was

“Are You My Mother” by Dr. Seuss, which is why this month is dedicated to reading, to pay homage to him in remembrance of his birthday.

This month take some time to find out what piques your interest and find some reading material on that subject. Last year I was blessed to be a part of a book club with some very stunning inspirational women. I would suggest researching, joining a club, or even putting one together yourself that will motivate you to dive into more books. Please read with your children or grandchildren, and show them the importance of flipping pages and what adventures can be found between the covers of novels. Reading out loud to children is proven to have a lasting impact.

Happy Reading to you all.
